The modernisation of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), one of the largest and most complex research facilities in the world, includes replacing the existing cabling: almost 160 kilometres of cable are being swapped for new lines. A job like this demands precise planning, reliable technology and close cooperation between everyone involved.
A major project with exceptional requirements
The cabling work had to meet some very clear requirements:
- Reliable operation even under heavy workload
- Precise cutting of different cable types and sizes
- Intuitive and safe operation by different users
- Seamless integration into existing workflows
- High process reliability in multi-shift operation
To meet them, three LOIMEX MTR50/AR cable cutting machines were put into service.
Project-specific adaptation
Close cooperation between CERN, LOIMEX and Vetter Swiss AG, our partner in Switzerland, was key to the success. Together we tailored the machines to the specific needs of the project, with a focus on optimising the software to support the on-site work as well as possible: operating procedures were simplified, functions were adjusted to what is really needed and the repeatability of each step was improved.
As a result, the machines fit seamlessly into the existing processes, where they are now used for the cabling work.
Commissioning and on-site training
Technical acceptance of the machines took place directly at CERN once they had been installed. The staff then received comprehensive training on how to use them: the machine functions and, above all, safety aspects, workflows and getting the best out of the software.
This ensured that the systems could be used efficiently and safely from day one.
A collaboration that adds up
Projects of this scale call not only for powerful machines but, above all, for the ability to develop tailor-made solutions and to bring different areas of expertise together. The combination of CERN's technical know-how, LOIMEX's long experience in cable cutting technology and Vetter Swiss AG's skill in customer-specific adaptations has produced a solution designed exactly for the requirements of this project.
We would like to thank CERN and Vetter Swiss AG for their trust and the excellent cooperation.
